1. Icebreaker: What has been your favorite area to serve in at church, and why?
2. We’re starting a new series today called Rooted. The Bible often compares people to trees indicating that a healthy, growing Christian is like a flourishing, fruitful tree with deep roots. We’ll be teaching about some practical tools God has given to help us grow deeper spiritual roots.
Read our theme verse for this series: Colossians 2:6-7: “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
What are some of the main factors that have helped you grow spiritually over the years?
3. The New Testament book of Ephesians was written by the Apostle Paul while he was under house arrest in Rome in about 62 A.D. He wrote it as a letter to a community of Christ-followers in Ephesus, a wealthy port city, whose economy was based on selling religious goods and services related to the goddess Artemis, who had a large temple dedicated to her there. About seven years prior to writing this letter, Paul had visited Ephesus and planted a church. Read what one of the Ephesian silversmiths said about Paul in Acts 19:26-27: “And you see and hear how this fellow Paul has convinced and led astray large numbers of people here in Ephesus and in practically the whole province of Asia. He says that gods made by human hands are no gods at all. There is danger not only that our trade will lose its good name, but also that the temple of the great goddess Artemis will be discredited; and the goddess herself, who is worshiped throughout the province of Asia and the world, will be robbed of her divine majesty.”
What was this man’s concern? What does this show about his values?
4. Read Paul’s words in Ephesians 4:11-16: “So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, 12 to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. 14 Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. 15 Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. 16 From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.”
5. What do you notice in this passage about how God intended the church to work?
6. What is the job of pastors and leaders, based on this passage?
7. What is the job of the people in the church, according to this passage?
8. Our church uses the word “partner” rather than “member” for people who join our church. Consider what “membership” in a club or a store is like. With that in mind, why do you think we chose the word “partner” instead of “member”? How does the concept of church membership differ from church partnership?
9. Sometimes Christians have a “consumer mentality” about church. What do we mean by that?
10. What’s the problem with approaching your church experience like a consumer?
When we serve, we grow.
11. If you’ve experienced spiritual growth while serving at your church, share about that with your group.
When we serve, the church grows.
Paul explains three results when Christians serve their church in their area of gifting:
1. The church becomes more united (v.13).
12. You may have noticed that generally the most critical, complaining people tend to be people on the sidelines who are not actually involved in the work. Why do you think that is?
2. The church becomes more stable (v.14).
13. Why does a church grow more stable, when everyone is serving in their area of gifting?
3. The church becomes more loving (v.16).
14. If you’ve experienced a growing love for others as you’ve served on a team at your church, share about that.
15. If you’re not currently serving at COH, you can learn more about how to get plugged in at: https://communityofhope.church/serve
