In this series, we’ve been seeking to “love God with our minds” and considering whether there is such a thing as objective truth and whether we can trust the Bible is true. Truth is under attack in our world. The writers of Scripture claim that it contains truth in a special and unique way, because its source is God. This week, our own resident experts, Dr. Nathan Maxwell – Associate Professor of Old Testament, and Dr. Victor Copan - Professor of New Testament at Palm Beach Atlantic University responded to questions from our congregation. Here are the questions they discussed over the two services, so you can talk about them with your group.
1. Who decided which books made it into the Bible – what we call the “Canon”?
2. Since the Bible we have has been copied and translated over and over, can we trust that it contains the words that the original writers actually said?
3. Some versions of the Bible omit certain verses such as John 5:4. Why is this?
4. Why are there so many different translations of the Bible – even in English? What’s the difference between them (NIV, NLT, ESV, NSB, KJV, NASV, etc.)? On what do they base their decisions about which words they select as they’re translating?
5. Aren’t there contradictions in the Bible? How can we trust it, if it contradicts itself?
6. Do we know who wrote Genesis and when?
7. If the information in the gospels about Jesus’s life, death and resurrection really happened, you’d expect historical writings besides the Bible to mention it. Is Jesus mentioned outside the Bible?
8. If Jesus prayed to His father, is he actually praying to Himself since the Trinity proclaims that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one?
9. Why has God allowed evil to exist since the Garden of Eden, but then he does not allow it in Heaven and the New Earth?
10. What should our relationship to the Old Testament be? Why should we read it?
11. Why are there so many different interpretations of the Bible?
12. Why does God seem so different in the Old Testament compared to the New Testament?
13. What does the Bible mean to you personally? How does it impact your life personally?
