Each week, our Sermon Discussion Questions are here to help the sermon go deeper into your life.  You can think these through on your own, or discuss them with your spouse, family, or small group.

Our memory verse for this series is Ephesians 5:14: “Wake up, sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

Icebreaker question:  Are you a morning person or a night person?  What time of day do you tend to be at your most alert and awake?

Review from Week 1
1) You’ll never be all you were created to be outside of a relationship with God.

2) Your emotional well-being and your relationship with God are inter-connected.

3) Your identity isn’t based on what you do, what you have, or what others think of you.  It’s based on whose you are – a child of God.

4) Philosopher and theologian Søren Kierkegaard said, “Now with God’s help, I shall become myself.”

1.    Community of Hope’s 6th Core Value is:  “In Christ, we are free to become ourselves.”
What do we mean by that?

2.    Read 1 Samuel 17:32-40
David said to Saul, “Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him.”

33 Saul replied, “You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth.”

34 But David said to Saul, “Your servant has been keeping his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock, 35 I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it. 36 Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God. 37 The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Saul said to David, “Go, and the Lord be with you.”

38 Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armor on him and a bronze helmet on his head. 39 David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them.

“I cannot go in these,” he said to Saul, “because I am not used to them.” So he took them off. 40 Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

What do you notice in this passage?  What questions do you have?

3.    David was the youngest of 8 sons, and he wasn’t there that day as a soldier.  David was a shepherd, and his dad had asked him to deliver food to his older brothers who were serving in the Israelite army.  But David felt compelled stand up for God’s honor because of his love for God.  Read 1 Samuel 17:28:  “When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, ‘Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle.’”

Why did Eliab say this to David?  How would you have felt, if you were David in this situation?

4.    Look at David’s interaction with King Saul in 1 Samuel 17:33 & 38-39.  How do you think David felt in this situation?  What challenge did he face here?

5.    We often face a temptation to live in someone else’s armor - to be who others think we should be.  If you’ve ever experienced that in your own life, share about it with your group.

6.    What happens when a person tries to live into other people’s ideas about them?

7.    A codependent person lets another person’s behavior affect him or her and is obsessed with controlling that person’s behavior.  One aspect of codependency is people-pleasing.

How does co-dependency differ from a healthy response to the feedback or critique of others?

8.    Look again at 1 Samuel 17:34-37.  What was the basis of David’s confidence?

9.    We also face the temptation to wear our own armor.

What did Pastor Trevor mean by this statement, and what’s the problem with this?

10. When driving a car, over-correcting can be dangerous.  What are some other life situations where people tend to over-correct?

11. Pastor Trevor said: True freedom comes when we live into God’s armor for us.  How can you live that truth out in your own life?

12. Read Ephesians 6:10-11: “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.  Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes.”

How does a person “put on the armor of God”?  What does that mean practically?
