Each week, our Sermon Discussion Questions are here to help the sermon go deeper into your life.  You can think these through on your own, or discuss them with your spouse, family, or small group.

1.     Share with your group about your family of origin (family dynamic, faith structure, and your position in the family).

2.     Read Psalm 127:1 “If the Lord doesn’t build a house, the work of the builders is useless” What do you think King Solomon might have meant by this?

3.     Read Psalm 68:6a  “God sets the lonely in families…” What do you think this means, exactly?

4.      In this series we will focus on our relationships and family. Talk about the many different versions of your relationships that you consider your ‘family’ (church, teams, groups, etc.) Why do you consider each of these relationships as family?

·       Family is: A place where credibility is established.

5.     Define credibility in your own words.

6.     Read Luke 2:52 “Jesus became wiser and stronger. He also became more and more pleasing to God and to people. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man.” Talk about what kind of family life Jesus probably had growing up, in order to have this said of him.

·       Family is: The place where my faith is formed

7.     Pastor Dale said he often has appointments with people who are struggling with faith issues. He stated that these struggles are often the result of “circumstances having outpaced people’s spiritual disciplines, and it represents that it’s time to grow.” What do you think he meant by that?

8.     Read Deuteronomy 6:6-9 These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.” What are some practical ways you can follow these directives in your own life and family?

9.     Talk about the spiritual disciplines you follow now, and where you want to grow in your spiritual disciplines.

·       Family is: A refuge from life’s storms

10.  Do you think of your own home as a house of refuge, or is it more like a place of chaos and conflict? Explain your answer if you are willing.

11.  Read Psalm 127:1b Unless the Lord watches over the city, the guards stand watch in vain.” Talk about what this verse may mean.

12.  Talk about one thing you can do to create more of a sense of refuge in your home and your life.

·       Family is: A place where life can start over

13.  Read Luke 15:21-24 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’ But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23 Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24 For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So they began to celebrate.”

Why do you think the father was so eager to celebrate his son’s repentance?

14.  Is there an area in your life where you’d like to start over? Are you ready to seek forgiveness? Or offer forgiveness? Share about it if you are willing.
