Fresh Expressions Evangelism

Bringing Jesus to people who don’t attend church.

Fresh Expressions of church can start in pubs, restaurants, parks, community centers, living rooms, or anywhere you are!

Fresh Expressions grow and develop through a 6-step process:

1 - Listening

Fresh Expressions begin by prayerfully asking these questions and listening to God.

  • Who in my community is not connected to the church?

  • Where and how are they already gathering?

  • What hobbies, habits or activities of mine might God use to reach unchurched people?

  • What needs in our community could our church serve?

2 - Loving/Serving

Intentionally build meaningful relationships with people who do not attend church. To start a Fresh Expression among our neighbors outside the church we must first get to know them. This can happen through attending community events, hosting meals, doing community service projects, or through hobbies and hang-outs that people already have. Ideas include: dog parks, fitness centers, golf, team sports, parents attending kids’ sports or other activities, equestrian events, bowling, dancing, park activities, public libraries, children’s playgrounds, etc.

3 - Building Community

As relationships are built, a group begins to form and meet regularly. These communities start with a few Christians who are comfortable around non-Christians, who intentionally include and invite non-Christians, building friendships and trust with them.

4 - Exploring Discipleship

The group begins to explore the Christian faith together. Depending on the context, this may occur through intentional but brief discussion around a Scripture or a spiritual topic, or in some settings (such as a home) the group may watch our online sermon and then possibly discuss it afterward over a meal or refreshments.  New believers grow toward Christ-like lifestyle through being in close proximity with believers and observing how they live.

5 - Church Taking Shape

As a Fresh Expression takes shape, marks of church – such as Holy Communion, baptism, giving, serving – begin to emerge, although they may look different than in a traditional church.

6 - Do It Again

As our church hears stories of new Fresh Expressions developing and growing, we hope that others are inspired to start a Fresh Expression in an area of the community where they have a presence.

Susan Hineman, Ministry Leader

Susan loves the Church and has a heart for those who will never enter the church walls. Susan and her family originally joined Community of Hope in 1997, and after living in Virginia for the past 13 years, she and her husband, John, recently returned back to South Florida and COH. Knowing that God is moving everywhere in our community, she is excited to help partner in that movement through serving, listening, and joining others in their existing communities with Fresh Expressions.

Learn more about Fresh Expressions

In July 2020, we invited Dr. Michael Beck, Director of Re-Missioning for Fresh Expressions U.S. and Cultivator of Fresh Expressions for the Florida Conference of the United Methodist Church, to teach at our online Hope University. He explains what fresh expressions are and how God is using them reach people who might never have come to a church.
